Librarian Jen Prasch went from organizing books to organizing classes when she spent her summer working as a summer school administrator.

Prasch finished her admin certification in May which is required to become an administrator along with some state testing. She not only applied but was also recommended for the job.

“Just like being in the library, you don’t realize how much the job entails until you are put in it,” Prasch said.

For her, working as an administrator involved hiring, budgeting, going over both the student and faculty handbooks and communication with not just students and teachers but also parents. She had lots of to do lists and had to make sure she had enough teachers. One of her roles was making sure the teachers were supported. One of the ways she did that was through staff fun days. Some of those fun days included workout Wednesdays and snacks that were offered every week.

Summer school rotates between all the high schools, but “all high schools had massive construction,” Prasch said.

To manage in a building with construction, Prasch said, “We tried to keep it on one side of Millard West to keep everyone in the same vicinity. We did have a first and second floor, but we kept everyone in the same area,” she said.

When asked her thoughts on being in an unfamiliar building Mrs. Prasch said she had to “Walk around and learn the school’s number system and where all of the classes were.” They also had to make a map of where the classes were.

After her experience this summer Mrs. Prasch says she would like to do it again next summer and is even considering becoming an administrator.

While some students take summer school to get ahead, some are hoping to conclude their degree.

“It’s a great opportunity for students to get their credits for high school graduation. We had a graduation ceremony and we had 29 students graduate which was really cool to experience,” Prasch said.
