“A successful team is a group of many hands but of one mind.” This quote describes one of Millard South’s most talented teams this fall season. On Aug. 26, sophomores, juniors, and seniors found their way to the auditorium for their academic letter ceremony, all except the girl’s varsity volleyball team.
Girls varsity volleyball made a 30-minute drive down to Douglas County West High School for the first competition of their season against the Douglas West Falcons.
Volleyball games have 3 or 5 sets a game. Volleyball players are expected to play to the end of every point in a 25-point game. This game took only 3 sets in a 5-set game, with Millard South as the victors.
While the competition was tough, in all the sets it all came down to the work and effort that the volleyball team put in together throughout the pre-season in order to bring home the win in Douglas West’s court.
“I started playing in 7th grade, so I just wanted to play in high school with more people and more talent,” outside hitter junior, Jamie Murceck said. “I like when someone makes a really good play and you all can just celebrate on the court,” she said. “I’m most excited to see how our talent will show on the court,” she said
It takes a whole team to score a point, and when asked what’s her motivation to play volleyball sophomore middle blocker Madison Phillips said, “I started volleyball when I was really young and kept consistent with practicing.
This year, the varsity team is on track to an outstanding season. There is no team without teamwork and collaboration, something that the squad has covered.
“I’m really proud of our energy on the court,” Phillips said. “We have a new rotation that we do and our ability to adapt to that quickly was really good,” she said.
This game was an important one as it was a key definer to set up for success as this year’s volleyball regular season goes on for another month, and is nowhere near to be over, for the battle at state.
