You’ve probably heard the song “Espresso” on the radio at some point in the last few months. Many people think that that was Sabrina Carpenter’s first hit song, but her career has actually progressed over the past 10 years. Sabrina Carpenter, a 25 year-old pop artist, released her 6th studio album “Short N’ Sweet,” on Aug. 23. Although this is her sixth studio album, Carpenter has said that she feels like it’s only her second real album as an adult. Carpenter has gained a lot of new fans over the past year. She started off her career working on Disney channel and then she transitioned to singing. Her career really took off in 2023 when she opened for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour. The album consists of many genres including pop, country, rock, and R&B. “Short N’ Sweet” features 12 songs including her two recent hit singles “Espresso” and “Please Please Please.” There was also a 3rd single released on the day the album came out.
This album’s release has been highly anticipated for months. Since the album has come out it has been promoted by Carpenter on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and with her Complex pop-up in LA. It also was promoted at the MTV Video Music Awards where Sabrina Carpenter performed her three singles and her song “Espresso” won song of the year. This album earned over 57 million streams on spotify on the first day that it was released. Fans have expressed how much they love the album despite it being short. Some fans believe that a short album with great songs is better than a long album with mediocre songs. This is relevant considering the album is only 36 minutes long.
Before listening to the album I was expecting her classic pop songs with a few more emotional tracks mixed in and that is exactly what the album was. Now that I have listened to the whole album multiple times, I believe this is Carpenter’s best album. It has fun pop songs while also having slower songs too.
With Jack Antonoff as the producer, this album keeps up with Carpenter’s signature music. The album shows how all the songs can have a theme and follow the same vibe without sounding exactly the same. Each song is unique but they all still sound like a story and like they go together. I think the song that has gotten the most attention since the album release is “Taste.” The music video for this song has inspiration from the 1992 movie “Death Becomes Her” and the video also features the main actor from “Wednesday,” Jenna Ortega. While this album doesn’t have any features, you can tell it borrows a lot of inspiration from other artists. For example, her song “Slim Pickins” has a country aspect to it that people compare to Dolly Parton.
All in all, “Short N’ Sweet” has been loved by many fans. It exceeded people’s expectations and was overall a success.
