It’s election season. This time of year we all hear a lot about people running for office, but what would it be like if one of the candidates was your dad? For junior Eve Osborn that is a reality. Her dad, Dan Osborn, is running to be a senator for the state of Nebraska.
Eve is on the dance team, she’s an officer for DECA, a manager for The Patriot Post, a part of JCB and in the National Honor Society.
Eve said that having a parent in politics definitely does affect her daily life.
“Almost everybody I know, my teachers, my friends, talk to me about it every day and mention it. It just changes my life in that way that like somebody is always bringing that up to me and noticing me,” she said.
Eve mentioned that she previously had not been big into politics but that “since my dad has been running I have looked into his policies and looked into other people’s policies,” she said.
Eve explained how almost every time there is a T.V. on, she sees an ad either in favor of or against her dad, and just how strange that is.
“And it’s weird to see it because like, especially the ads that are against him are all lies about him, and I know they’re lies,” Eve said.
She explained that her dad is only home one or two days a month during this time.
“It’s really busy and he’s always out there working really hard for his team and for us, so I understand, but it’s hard not having him around when he used to be home every day,” she said.
Eve mentioned that she does have some involvement in her dad’s campaign.
“I do go to some of his speaking events just to see what even goes on there and support him, and then I do go to like photo shoots for commercials and stuff to support him,” she said.
Though people often talk about politics in daily conversation, for Eve that conversation might be about her own dad.
“I do talk about him [but] I try to stay away from his policies and stuff because it can be controversial. I will never bring him up, but if somebody brings him up to me, I’ll answer questions that they have and I’ll talk about him,” she said.
Certain aspects of family life for the Osborns will change if Dan is elected.
“If my dad does get elected, he will have to move to Washington for like half the year, so that’ll change, and people will notice me more, I guess. I don’t think much will really change though,” Eve said.
As for Eve, she has no plans to run for office herself.
“I would never do it because it’s a lot of pressure.”
