The Millard South football team has officially become the class A state champions, dethroning the long-reigning Westside football team 27-10. This victory will be remembered for years as Millard South last won class A state football in 2009 against Millard North. The Patriots had an almost undefeated season ending with a 12-1 record with their only loss being to an out-of-state, nationally ranked team, the Basha Bears. The championship game wasn’t going to be easy, but they worked together and took it all.
The excitement was noticeable from the moment the game began, with 300 red and blue streamers soaring into the sky at kickoff by the students, setting the tone for a high-energy first quarter. The first quarter was a thrilling back-and-forth battle, which neither team managed to score, keeping the fans and the student section on their toes.
As the game moved into the second quarter, down 5 minutes, junior Dallas Gaius completed a pass for the first touchdown of the night, putting the Patriots ahead 6-0. As the quarter continued, star wide receiver Amarion Jackson hurt his right ankle and was out for the rest of the game. Though it hurts to see such a strong player out of the game, his teammates had his back and continued strongly without him. By the end of the second quarter, the Warriors were up 10-6, keeping the game tightly contested. The energy in the student section began to dwindle, creating a sense of tension and uncertainty among the crowd.
The third quarter saw a revitalization of spirit, with the players and fans alike rallying their energies for the final push. With 4 minutes to go in the third quarter, a 46-yard pass was completed to Aamir Hill for a touchdown. Millard South moved ahead once again with a 12-10 lead. After that pass, the energy had shifted among all, fist bumps and hugs were being given. Students excitedly jumped up and down as this energy continued with another big play that put the Patriots ahead 13-10 leading into the 4th and final quarter of the game.
The fourth quarter was a dramatic climax, with the team digging deep and scoring two crucial touchdowns. Junior Jett Thomalla’s pass was completed to Hill for the first touchdown in the fourth quarter with 6 minutes left, igniting even more fire within the players and excitement from the fans. With a secured point after touchdown, packing in even more points the score became 20-10. The second touchdown was even more spectacular. With just two minutes left in the game, Aamir Hill broke free for an 81-yard rushing touchdown. The secured point after touchdown put Millard South at a commanding 27-10 lead as the final score of the game. Those final seconds of the game were a blur of excitement and celebration for all, as the boys secured their victory and the state championship title. The stadium on the south’s side erupted in celebration, with fans knowing they had witnessed a game that would be remembered for years to come.
After the game, Coach Wisdom expressed immense pride in his team.
“It feels good, I’m happy for the kids. They did a tremendous job. I’m super proud of all of them, they deserved it. They earned this one, they’ve been putting in work all season and year long for this win. They are well deserving of this.”
Coach Wisdom’s heartfelt words resonated deeply, especially with the seniors who have given their all to this program over the years. Marking a triumphant end to their high school career, the seniors never lost a home game this season and consistently played with passion and dedication throughout their careers at Millard South.
“I have been playing with most of these guys since 4th grade, so there’s no better way to end it than being in a state championship game,” senior defensive end Adam Pugh said.
The bonds they’ve formed on and off the field represent more than just teamwork: they’ve built lasting friendships that will endure long after South Boyz football. The class of 2025 stands out as a memorable group, with standout performers on defense and leaders on offense, securing their place in the record books.
The team’s hard work and dedication have truly paid off most spectacularly. Beating Westside, who had an impressive 32-game winning streak and had won state the last two years, is a testament to their relentless effort and determination. This victory is not just a win on the scoreboard or for the school, but a celebration of the countless hours of practice, the unwavering commitment, and the unbreakable bonds formed along the way. The entire community is incredibly proud of what has been achieved, and will never be forgotten.
