The Cross Country team had a season marked by determination, hard work, and outstanding performances by Abbi Durow and other runners. From the first meet to the final race, the team has shown massive growth and unity, making this season one to remember.
The season began with intense training sessions, where runners pushed through early morning practices and challenging workouts. The dedication of both the athletes and the coaches was noticeable as the team prepared for their meets. The runners achieved their personal best and the team showcased their collective strengths.
“The season went [better] than I expected and this year was great,” Durow said.
“The advice I would give to someone is, “Running isn’t bad if you give it a try, many people say it sucks but if you give it a try you’ll like it.” I listen to one last song before getting ready for my race and just listen to music. If someone doesn’t run a good race, everyone is always there to make sure they don’t get down on themselves. Of course, our team chemistry is what helps us become a better team. A memorable moment was crossing the finish line at state and how I got 3rd. I was expected to get 5th so it was a big accomplishment. One challenge from this season was not running good races for most of the first half of the season. Our girls’ team ran super well at districts this year and I couldn’t be prouder of how we all performed at that meet. My season was exactly what I wanted it to be like. Especially the last half of the season,” Durow said.
As the season went on, the team faced a variety of challenges on the course. From muddy trails to steep hills, the team tackled them all with resilience and determination.
The highlight from the season came at the Nebraska State XC Championship meet. Even though the boys didn’t place, Abbi Durow placed 3rd overall in the meet. Despite this achievement, the girl’s team placed 10th, and the cross-country team is getting better than ever. This shows their dedication and teamwork as a team. The teamwork and friendships among the runners were visible, with each member supporting and motivating one another through every race.
“The teamwork in cross country is incredible. We support each other in many different ways. We share tips on improving our forms and cheer each other on during the courses. Even tho its an individual sport in many way, we all supporting each other in training.” said Gabby Hasenkamp
The cross country team balanced their school work and athletics throughout the season which demonstrated true student-athletic spirit. The coaches played a crucial role by providing a positive and supportive environment.
“Balancing school work with cross country can be challenging, but it’s all about time management. I make sure to plan my week ahead, setting aside specific times for homework and study sessions around my practice schedule. Staying organized and prioritizing tasks helps me stay on top of both academics and athletics.” Said Hasenkamp
“Our coaches is amazing at creating a positive and supportive environment. For example, they always start practice with a motivational talk, reminding us of our progress and encouraging us to support each other. They also celebrate our achievements, big or small, which boosts our morales and keeps us motivated,” Hasenkamp said.
