Millard South’s National Honor Society has undergone extreme changes over the past few years with the formation of The Ultimate Patriot, new spring fundraisers, and most notably, the departure of former English teacher and sponsor Mary Kay Desjardins. It seemed uncertain who would fill the spot in the current school year, but luckily, over the summer arrangements were made with new social studies teacher Elizabeth Motazedi.
“When I accepted the job at Millard South, I knew I wanted to get involved with extracurricular activities,” Motazedi said. “During the summer, I spoke with Mr. Throne, who mentioned that NHS was looking for a sponsor. Since I was heavily involved in NHS during high school, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to participate and contribute.”
Motazedi’s efforts have already helped contribute to creating a brighter future for NHS.
She will be attending an upcoming leadership conference with NHS and Student Council members in Chicago, and she is “eager to learn more about leadership at Millard South through that experience.”
“I’d love to help make it an annual event if possible,” she added.
Students have also noticed the time Motazedi has dedicated to making NHS run smoothly.
“She has definitely put a lot of work into our society even as a first-year sponsor,” senior NHS officer Jaedyn Colman said. “She is here to facilitate new change[s] and won’t be thrown off from our older way of doing things. I believe that she will be able to fluently lead future members and officers and provide lots of feedback.”
The club has also allowed Motazedi to connect with students outside of a classroom environment.
“My favorite part of being involved in NHS has been meeting students I wouldn’t normally have the chance to interact [with] within the classroom,” she said. “Since I mostly teach freshmen and sophomores, it’s been nice to work with juniors and seniors in an organization and club setting. I’ve enjoyed building those relationships and getting to know some of the students at Millard South.”
In addition to NHS, Motazedi has also become a sponsor for Leo Club, which focuses on volunteering at events throughout the community.
“I absolutely love being a part of Leo Club. The students involved are incredibly passionate about the organization, which makes me excited for the service opportunities we’re working on. Currently, we’re planning a giving tree for the holiday season and creating holiday cards, and I’m thrilled to see their enthusiasm,” she explained.
Motazedi has already added amazing insight and positivity to NHS and Leo Club, and she is eager to continue this in the future.
“I’m incredibly excited to be part of the Millard South community. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside wonderful colleagues and to teach some great classes,” Motazedi said. “I’m passionate about my involvement in NHS and Leo Club, and I look forward to meeting more students and continuing to contribute to the organization’s culture and continuing to contribute to the organization’s culture and success.”
