In a world where our differences highlight our lives, the group Patriot Pals stands as a club of unity and acceptance. This program brings together special education students and general education students for a series of shared activities and experiences, which lead to new friendships and genuine connections. The group has a remarkable impact on students, both general and special education, and promotes inclusivity for everyone.
Patriot Pals was formed in order for Millard South to meet all the requirements to be considered a Unified Champion School through the Special Olympics. According to club advisor Josie Sininger, the idea was started as a way to bring students together who would not normally see each other throughout the school day. What they do is fairly simple. They typically come together to do a quick activity and eat snacks, bonding and ignoring all kinds of differences. The group now meets once a month on Wednesdays from after school until 4 p.m.
Patriot Pals also has a huge importance to the general education students as well. Libby Rigg, a sophomore who participates in Patriot Pals, shared a heartwarming opinion when asked about her feelings on the group.
“I love it,” she said. “Special Education is one of my biggest passions, so I really enjoy it. I can really feel the connection, and I really love having such a unified school community.”
The impact of Patriot Pals on students is nothing but positive. For the students who receive special services, it allows them to be part of a club at school that is easily accessible to them and in a familiar space. And for the general education students, they’re able to learn compassion and to build friendships with students that they may not otherwise come across in the general classes.
The road ahead for this group seems to be nothing but bright. On behalf of the group, Siniger shares her thoughts on their future, saying.
“Patriot Pals hopes to continue to spread the word that inclusion matters and to get more students throughout Millard South that want to participate in activities and events that promote inclusivity. We hope to continue to find ways for Millard South to be inclusive to all students and their abilities.”
