2023 is looking to be a good year for movies with a few solid releases so far and a ton more on the way from renowned directors such as, Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan, Wes Anderson, Martin Scorcese, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve, and many more. I will be going over some of my most anticipated movies releasing in 2023. 

First up is my most anticipated film of the year, Wes Anderson’s new movie “Asteroid City.” As a big fan of all of his work I was already eager to hear he has a new movie coming out. “Asteroid City” is set in a small desert town in the 1960’s where a monumental ‘event’ occurs. This movie appears to have some science fiction elements to it which is new for Wes Anderson as his previous films are either realistic fiction or fiction. This movie has an incredible cast with an onslaught of some well known household names including, Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Willem Dafoe, Jeffery Wright, Steve Carell and more Wes Anderson Regulars. “Asteroid City” is shaping up to be one of my favorite movies of the year. The film releases on June, 23rd, 2023.

Next up is “Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig. Although I have only seen one of the movies she has directed, she is also an incredible actress in many films. Her film from 2017, ‘Lady Bird’ was very charming and funny so I am looking forward to her new movie for those reasons and more. “Barbie” Is described as “A Barbie doll living in Barbieland is expelled from the world for not being perfect enough, too eccentric and not fitting the usual mold.” Some movies that inspired ‘Barbie’ (2023) are “The Truman Show,” and “The Young Girls of Rochefort.” Both movies are very different. I am excited to see how she will blend the two themes from these movies into “Barbie.” Barbie also has a very good cast with the main “Barbie” being played by Margot Robbie and the main “Ken” being played by Ryan Gosling. Overall I am ready for the colorful, fun, and music filled adventure that awaits in “Barbie.” “Barbie” hits theaters on July, 21st, 2023.

Lastly, another highly anticipated movie releasing this year is Christopher Nolan’s new movie, Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer who is better known as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb.” With Cilian Murphy set to portray the historic figure, he stars alongside Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt and more in this star studded cast. The movie will tell the events of how he created the first atomic bomb and the aftermath as it is such a monumental moment in history that changed the world forever. This movie looks like a very good drama and hopefully a good retelling of the shocking true story. I am very excited to see this for the special effects and the cast as well as the story which I find to be quite interesting. CNN reported that Christopher Nolan recreated the nuclear explosion without using CGI meaning it was a real explosion. “Oppenheimer” comes out on July, 21st, 2023, which is the same day that “Barbie” releases, so me and many others will head to the theaters for an unstoppable double feature, Starting with ‘Barbie’ first of course.

In the end, these are only a few of the incredible films to come out this year. I am very excited to see them all. What are your most highly anticipated movies of the year?
