This year’s Homecoming theme is Hollywood, and Hollywood means glamor and allure. It’s probably safe to say that nearly everybody is excited about this year’s Homecoming dance and its theme. People are already choosing outfits to wear, planning what colors they should use to match the concept, and even asking out others. As the annual Millard South Homecoming dance approaches, Student Council member Kylie Campbell and her team have to hastily prepare. An interview with her helped put the seemingly stressful preparation into perspective.
Choosing a theme can be a challenging task, but this team has devised a plan to make it easier. “We came up with this thing that helps us with the theme. We all choose one that we want and then shorten the list. Once the list is shortened to three possible themes, we then choose something that we all agree on. Hollywood got the most votes, so that’s what we went with.”
“We have specific work days, usually every Saturday and Sunday in September to decorate,” explains Kylie. “We make all of the decorations by hand and put some of them out the night before, like the balloons and streamers. We make them ourselves because we want to keep that touch of realism. This year, we’re adding more 3D designs so that it’s more interactive.”
For a big dance like this, a lot of teamwork and planning has to be involved. Luckily for Student Council, teamwork shouldn’t be a problem. “We came up with all of the ideas, talked about what we wanted, narrowed it down, and once we came to a conclusion, we just went with it and started coming up with ideas for each section of the school that we wanted to include. We started planning in July, so we had a meeting where we took time to start thinking about ideas and then we came up with Hollywood and just added onto it.”
Along with decorations, the overall idea is a vital part of the dance. “We’re really going to incorporate the glam and light of Hollywood, having the movie idea plus the celebrities involved with it. You’re going to feel like you’re actually in Hollywood.” She also adds that the difference from last year’s Homecoming will be very apparent and that it will be more interactive.
An interview with sophomore Kelly Bucksbee helped us gain knowledge on how the average student feels about this event. “Homecoming has always been something I’ve looked forward to. It’s always so much fun and always has such a positive vibe. Student Council always does such a great job with setting up and managing everything. It’s so much fun to go with friends and just enjoy the night.”
Based on the description and review of this dance, Student Council must captivate the charming essence of Hollywood. The work is cut out for this team and the assignment is hefty, but this isn’t their first rodeo. Overall, it seems like the theme will provide an exciting opportunity to get more involved with the environment. Although there’s still plenty of preparation left, Kylie and her crew have Homecoming under control for September 23rd.
