During the summer, fans looked forward to the sun-soaked teenage show, ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’, and it delivered. The long-awaited season 2 was released, and it was worth the wait.
‘The Summer I Turn Pretty’ is a coming-of-age drama based on a series of books by Jenny Han. It shows a teenage girl going through the complexity it takes to be a teenager. With self-discovery, family issues, and love.
The first season left us off with a cliffhanger with Jeremiah finding out about his mother’s cancer diagnosis, which left me at the edge of my seat waiting for next summer.
Nevertheless, season 2 picked up right where it left off, with the main character still torn over the two brothers which she both loves. With the ending scene of season one, there was much more damage over “Team Conrad” and “Team Jeremiah.”
This debate between the brothers leaves people immersed in this show, and one thing that keeps me enthralled is the fact that the show is playing out symmetrically to how the books are. Most authors scramble the show to a point where it’s loosely based on the book but scenes and lines have lined up exactly to the books.
Additionally, the story line of Susannah, the boy’s mother, and her cancer added more depth to the series and showed awareness of the lasting effects of grief. Overall, ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ continues to captivate me with its remarkable cast and story line and how it represents the teenage experience.
