Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a Missouri woman sent to prison for the murder of her mother, Clauddinnea “Dee Dee” Blanchard, who allegedly abused her daughter and kept her sick for years, was released on Dec. 28, 2023.
She was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center at 3:30 a.m. local time, according to the Missouri Department of Corrections.
She was charged with 10 years in prison after her and her boyfriend at the time, Nicholas Godejohn, planned and executed the death of her mother DeeDee.
“It wasn’t really her fault,” junior Charleen Darra said. “Her mom was controlling her.”
In 2015, Gypsy Rose met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating site. The two ultimately connected as Blanchard revealed the abuse she was enduring. She then conspired with Nick to escape her mother so she could have freedom. In June, Nick murdered Dee Dee while Gypsy Rose hid in the bathroom.
Gypsy was a victim of Munchausen by proxy, a form of abuse in which a guardian may seek attention or sympathy by making their child ill or exaggerating their illness. Throughout her early life, her mother controlled many aspects of her life, making her undergo years of intense medical treatments that she never needed.
Though Gypsy did not actually kill her mother, some people think she should still be behind bars. When she was released it was a shock to everyone that she had a husband, Ryan Anderson.
“I feel good about her marriage,” senior Addyson Willits said. “I think he treats her well.” He allegedly wrote to Gypsy in 2020 during the pandemic and then fell in love through the next two years and ended up getting married in August of 2022.
Gypsy is enjoying her freedom, but do you think she should be walking the streets? Out in the public? Or would you have done the same thing she did?
