All good things must come to a close, and for Coach Shari Burrus, that means ending a significant chapter in her life as she retires from her role as the varsity cheer coach at Millard South High School. After a triumphant career with 8 state championships and 4 runner-ups, Burrus is stepping down after 25 years of dedication and spirit.
Burrus began cheerleading when she was younger after watching the connection her older sister had on her cheer squad.
“I saw the friendship and fun she had with her cheer squad and wanted to achieve that,” Burrus said.
Her journey into coaching cheer began when her daughter’s team unexpectedly needed a coach halfway through their season. What started as a temporary solution quickly turned into a passion for Burrus. She discovered a love for coaching and has been dedicated to the role ever since.
One of Coach Burrus’s most memorable moments came in 2020. In 2020 her mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor right before state cheer.
“We won the state, and on the way home the girls suggested that we should stop in my hometown to share the trophy with my mom,“ Burrus said.
This moment for Burrus will never be forgotten, she voiced that it was a proud moment and for the girls to think about her mom instead of themselves, she knew what she was doing was important. Her tenure has been marked by numerous victories, both on the competition floor and in the personal growth of her athletes.
As Burrus prepares to retire, she describes the experience as bittersweet.
“I will miss the girls and being at Millard South,” she says “But I will be able to spend more time with my family.”
Her impact on the Millard South community is undeniable. Students and colleagues speak highly of her dedication and the positive influence she’s had on their lives.
“She has left such a big impact on everyone she’s ever coached,” says senior cheerleader Tianna Rodarte “not only just with the way she coaches but the way she truly treats every cheerleader with so much respect and believes in them.“
Her former cheerleaders have followed in her footsteps, becoming the coaches themselves. This legacy is particularly meaningful to Burrus, as it ensures that the traditions and values she instilled will continue long after she leaves.
“My legacy of having former cheerleaders stepping into the coaching role now is very meaningful,” Burrus said.
As the school bids farewell to a cherished coach, the spirit and lessons Burrus instilled will undoubtedly continue to resonate.
Her legacy at Millard South will be remembered for years to come, a testament to the profound difference one dedicated individual can make.
