Vroom vroom! A new club is racing into Millard South. Junior Noah Litherland started “Car Club” to get others involved in his personal passion for old and new cars alike.
When asked about why he started the club he said, “Well I like cars a ton, and I know there’s a lot of car people at South [who do too], and I was like, you know what? It’d be cool if there was a car club here to get everyone together. So, I made a car club.” After securing a faculty supervisor, English teacher Justin Sonnenfelt, the group began with bi-weekly meetings discussing cars, building a community, and planning for future events like car shows.
Over the Halloween weekend, Car Club was able to share their cars with young students and families. Trunk or Treat is a classic well known Halloween event where people hand out candy from the trunks of their cars to kids.
Expecting three or four cars,“There was a higher turnout than I expected,” Litherland said.
As for the future of Car Club, he has many plans. He said he wants “to plan car meets for the club” and promote it to younger students to get them involved early on because he “didn’t get into cars for a long time, and [he]definitely would have gotten into cars earlier if [he’d] been introduced to it”. He promotes meeting reminders on the announcements, so if you’re interested, keep an eye out.
Heading into winter, they’re planning a Mario Kart tournament perfect for anyone who wants to test their racing skills. The club is still going to meet more this semester and decide future plans together. The next meeting will be on Nov. 19 in Room 110 at 3:30. Litherland and Sonnenfelt want people to know that anyone is welcome, so feel free to stop by whether you have an interest in cars, want to learn more, or find a community.
