USB-C is everywhere- Android phones, laptops, wireless earbuds, mirrorless cameras, gaming consoles, PC monitors, and even electric scooters, but not everywhere. Apple uses USB-C for Macbooks and Ipads and decides to use Lightning connector for its smartphones. Every iphone has used Lightning until now. Every Iphone 15 has a USB-C port instead of Lightning.
At first Apple used a 30- pin connector on old iphones and ipods in 2003. Nine years later, Apple then switched to the Lightning port, which could be plugged in any direction. Now 11 years later, the lightning port is going away and the USB-C is coming in.
Apple laptops and ipads have been using USB-C ports. They embraced USB-C when the 12-inch Macbook came out in 2015 and in 2018 when the Ipad Pro came out.
USB-C is now universal since almost every device uses it. Now that’s a big benefit, you can now be able to use your Macbook charger to recharge your iPad and iPhone.
“I don’t have an iPhone 15, but having to go out and pay for a block and charger sucks, ” senior Lilly Jacks said, “I think that Apple is just trying to steal my money because now-a-days paying for a phone and a charger is expensive. When you pay for the phone, the block doesn’t even come with the charger.”
USB-C has benefits, but it also has disadvantages such as lack of standardization. The lack of standard on what USB-C can do makes it confusing and complicated because USB-C is capable of so much. The wrong USB-C charger can damage your device by manufacturers being careless or cutting corners to make money. Having a USB-C can be difficult to clean.
“I think it’s not worth the hype, and the bad rumors about the 15 are true. The USB-C is super inconvenient because I used to have many chargers and now I only have one. It makes the phone overheat,” said sophomore Emilia (M) Hoff.
You may think that USB-C can plug into everything since it is universal, but there are other types of USB’s. There are four main types, Type-A, Type-B, Type-C, Micro-B. USB Type-A is the most common USB cable. USB Type-B has a smaller, squarer connector and is used most commonly with printers and scanners. USB Type-C can be found in most new technologies like cellphones, Nintendo Switch or Playstation5, but you have to be careful using this type of USB because not all are created equal. Micro USB-B are probably the most common beside USB Type-A. Android phones and modern consoles use this smaller form.
