Honesty when I was given this story I didn't have an idea of what to do, I had to take some time to look up difference images and I took about 3 or 4 images and morphed them together into my own piece, I used black pen and markers for this piece.

Artist Statement: Making review art with the musicians in photonegative / silhouetted against the background is a concept that I've been kicking around in my head for a while now. I got to two separate images of the members of the Black Keys (Pat Carney on the left, Dan Auerbach on the right), put them on the same canvas, made them semi-transparent, filled in their forms with dark colors, and outlined the details in white. Created, as always, with digital illustration tools in Photoshop, which was especially helpful in isolating and manipulating the layers so I could get the desired effect.

Artist Statement: My first outing into making art for the newspaper, created with digital illustration tools in Photoshop. Started with a blank white canvas, found clipart for the two integral elements (an outline of the state of Texas and a guitar) off of Google Images, and put them together. Turned down the opacity on both of them and sketched the basic outline of the whole thing, with the neck of the guitar running into the pandhandle. The coloration was relatively easy on the state outline, but I had to follow more closely along with the clipart on the guitar section. I ended up tracing the clipart at first, but had to do a lot of resizing, manipulation, and original coloring to get it to smoothly transition into Texas. Made it look like the guitar was "growing" out of the state by using the blending tool on where the two sections met. The strings were pretty difficult, as I couldn't get them straight enough drawing freehand. I ended up settling with the basic line tool, but that meant I couldn't layer them under the frets or blend them out at the bottom. Whole thing took about 2-3 hours.

Artist Statement: A lot of the promotional material and packaging surrounding Ohio Players has a big "old school bowling alley" motif, so I wanted my art to go along with that. I ended up taking some bowling ball clip art I found, put it together with the Black Keys logo off of the new LP cover, and drew over them. It ended up being a nice little exercise in shading for me. All of my art is created with digital illustration tools in Photoshop, which makes manipulating layers and altering fine details far easier for me, especially compared to physical pencil and paper mediums.

As I listened to the album more and read what other people had to say about Emerson's artistry, I realized more and more that The Golden Crystal Kingdom was inextricably tied to Texas, and I wanted to create something that reflected that.

Artist Statement: Outlined with a fine tip pen, I chose to draw a radio that I had always seen growing up. I knew I wanted to involve Nelson's face into the art and decided to draw him and the instruments he was known for playing in his music into the screen of the radio. I wanted to show just how his music reached his listeners.

Artist Statement: This piece involves characters from shows and movies affected by the writer's strike. I drew these characters as if they were in a meeting with the writer except there is no writer. They all have worried to nonchalant faces expressing their concern and unawareness. I used pencil and a fine tip marker as my media so that I could easily shade and extenuate their outlines. I decided to not work with color to give more of a gloomy and serious vibe. As I drew the background I envisioned what a meeting room would look like with big open windows leveling with the clouds, plain walls, and carpet instead of tiles. With the characters, I had used reference photos to make sure I drew them correctly. Drawing the actors, i had specifically used reference photos of their side profiles. As I searched for side profiles of the cartoon characters I noticed that looking for a picture and even watching clips of the character was difficult because they are rarely originally drawn showing their side profile so i had to keeping redrawing the character until it looked "right". I drew this in my sketch book and then scanned the artwork on a flatbed scanner and used Photoshop to pop the contrast a little and clean up any extra marks or dirty white areas with the eraser tool. With this art piece I definitely had to make sure I drew the characters and actors carefully so that the viewers could easily identify who they all are, making it a tedious task. I would have my classmates look at the art to receive feedback on whether or not I had accomplished my goal.
