Did you know that arguing with people can be a professional hobby? Did you also know that there is more than one possible way to argue with someone? Well, it can be, and there’s multiple distinct varieties of arguing, A.K.A debating.
The Millard South Debate Team was first documented in the 1973-1974 season, and since then, it has had many successful seasons, won several gold medals, and has dawned inspiration in the hearts of many adamant students.
For most people, the debate team provides them a creative, intellectual outlet to problem solve and think about the many problems of the world and how to solve or deal with them in the best manner. It lets them discover new perspectives and takes on matters that they didn’t even know existed, becoming a major eye-opener for many. For some others, it’s that and throwing paper airplanes at the student aid.
“I thought it was gonna be a lot harder than it actually was. It’s pretty easy,” freshman Jesse Beason said. “I get to argue against people, and it helps me relieve stress.”
“I think it’s pretty epic, as the kids say,” senior Toby Schweizer said. “It allows me to bring out ideas…and it gives me a space to openly talk about things I’m interested in, like politics and world issues.”
Ashley Benoit is in her second year as the team’s coach, replacing James Constantino who had been with the program for more than 10 years.
“I do miss Mr. Constantino…But I think Mrs. [Benoit] has revitalized the program and has added a lot more new members into debate, which I think is good for debate is all,” Schweizer said.
“I think it’s the fact that we get to blend so many modern situations with also foundational texts…” Benoit said, when asked about the specialty and importance of debate. “…they can enact change in the world. And I feel like it really empowers them. And so I think that’s valuable.”
“…all these kids come together with all of these different views and different…outlooks on life and experiences and you’re able to kind of funnel that into this method of change.”
The debate team is a very open place, limited only to an infinite amount of ideas from an infinite amount of students. Anyone can join, it’s not restricted to people in a certain course or program or whatever.
The debate team is always welcoming new members, and if you feel passionate about fighting people – with words, that is – over complex and unique topics such as politics, policies, laws, and bills, then maybe the team is the right place for you!
The team starts their season in the second weekend in November at Lincoln Southwest, and we wish them the best of luck!
