Athletes are used to waking up early for practice but freshman Collin Riddle wakes up early on Monday’s to lead the Fellowship of Christian Athletes club in coach Mendenhall’s room at 8am. FCA is a student lead organization that Collin started this year and so far he has heard positive feedback from his fellow students.
Sophomore Makenzie Berg says “FCA is an amazing way to know the Lord whether you’re an athlete or not. Our leaders do an amazing job of growing people’s faith and every leader is super welcoming and wants you to know who Jesus is! Collin is an amazing kid and he has helped so many of his friends and teammates reach God.”
Many who participate in FCA are athletes including Collin himself who is a wrestler and football player. Collins dad is a pastor and Collin says that since he has been listening to his father preach for many years, he finds that some things he talks about during an FCA meeting closely relate to what his father has said.
During an interview with Ashley Riddle, Collin’s mom she said “He has been in church all of his life and it is neat for us to be mentors, I love hearing him talking to his friends and he will say oh my dad said this or my mom said this. He has been an athlete for a very long time and that is very important to him and faith is as well so combining those two things was just the perfect match and a way for him to get involved with his friends at school.”
Many people don’t think of a freshman being a leader in a club since high school can be an intimidating time but Collin fits the role well. It took a while for him to get the club started and he said.
“I talked to my mom about it and my friend Noah about starting FCA here and in the beginning I was really nervous about this but my mom was pushing me and pushing me and it helped.”
Collin’s main goals with FCA are that he wants to see a Change and a shift in not just our school but the whole nation for Jesus and he thinks that it starts in Millard South.
“The main reason I wanted to start this and wanted him to start this is because Youth sports and youth culture in America is so crazy and kids wrap their whole identity around their sport and you know that when High school ends the sport ends so i think its neat that every week they get the chance to be reminded of their identity beyond just being an athlete or a champion and the trophy.” Ashley states
Collin believes people should go to FCA because it’s a great place to start your day right, build relationships, meet new people, and grow your walk with Jesus.
