Kristy McGuire has left a long lasting impact on the entirety of Millard South students, alumni, and Social Studies in our school. Now as her 38 years of teaching comes to an end, she reflects on her decision to retire.
“Now that my kids are back in Nebraska I’d like to spend more time with them and my grandchildren,” McGuire said.
McGuire started her teaching career in 1984 and always knew she wanted to do so. She’s been teaching all around the Social Studies department from World Geography to Human Diversity. She said her teaching was evolutionary as teaching has changed a lot since she started and she’s received new information about things.
“I feel very satisfied or lucky, yeah I feel lucky!” McGuire said.
When McGuire had her first interview to teach at another school they questioned her about having a husband and following him wherever he went which led her to decline from working there. She faced discrimination with bravery and eventually began teaching here and kept on for her entire career.
Specifically McGuire said “I was glad they didn’t move me because I didn’t want to move. Like When Millard West opened I didn’t want to move there!”
McGuire mentioned the struggle she faced deciding to move this year, she loves the environment in Millard South and she works very hard to do her best. But now she’d like to have more time with her kids and young grandkids and travel with them. She said “Even small three day weekends in cities I’ve never visited before in the United States.”
She’s left such a wide impact on all her students expanding their minds on stereotypes and keeping them open to diversity. Expanding her students’ minds on other religions and people, she will always leave a lasting impression on her students and school.
To close her time, McGuire wants to leave students with this thought.
“Always keep learning, never graduate!”
