As a senior, you tend to have either no freedom or all the freedom in the world. There’s no in between. Before my senior year, I took AP Lang as my first block. It was the week that the seniors of that year left, and the morning announcer had graduated. Mrs. Kaldahl asked if anyone wanted to read the morning announcements during that week. I raised my hand.

In retrospect, I didn’t know that this choice would lead me here. As I did the announcements for that day, I realized that this was something I would definitely want to do later. I asked Mrs. Kaldahl if she would need another announcer next year, and luckily she did. For me, it felt silly if I did announcements and was not a part of Journalism. It just didn’t feel right. So I decided to take newspaper. The only complication was that I couldn’t take the class during the first semester. I had a previously committed class that was necessary, so I had to wait for the last semester of my senior year to take it. I had no prior experience with any media classes. So for me, it was a whole different experience. Besides having to write, newspaper gave me so many different learning experiences. I learned about the differences between traditional writing and journalistic writing. I went to interview people, and I got to write an editorial. From just wanting to do the announcements, it led to me in this class. Besides getting to be a morning announcer, I got memories that were the best. Final conclusion, always be spontaneous. Always try new things. Never stop yourself from trying. If you don’t try, you don’t succeed.
