Artist Statement: I began by sketching out ideas on where I wanted the text and what I wanted to include to grab the viewers' attention. After deciding on a sketch I outlined the text and added details such as the tail on the S and the paw on the O. I used a reference of a foster cat and decided I wanted to include him in the background. I used a ball point pen to fill in and shade. After outlining, it was scanned and added into the layout.

I first made a list of what I wanted to include in the drawing, brainstorming the best way I could create the writers vision for the drawing. After creating the list I marked what I felt was best to keep and made six different sketches of what I could make the final sketch be. After receiving some feedback from the six sketches it was decided on the more Greek themed sketches and the idea of the girls walking in the "colosseum". I decided to switch the perspective to show the girls front profile instead of the back so that the viewers could get a better understanding of them making their first entrance giving them a more confident feel. I drew the girls based off the real competitors so that it would allow viewers to recognize some of the competitors. Their outfits are based of what gladiators wore but with more of a feminine touch, their protection still worn such as the shoulder pads, shin, and arm shields. For the background I used refences of columns to get an idea of the columns structures and details. I added the banners as a final touch to give a bold indication of what is going on. I used a fine felt tip pen and used pencil for the shading. I do wish I had done more for the background to minimize the negative space and added more details such as cracks and texture to the columns. I am content with the details of the outfits with the girls as well as the 3D effect of the bottom structure of the stone platform. After finalizing final touches the drawing was scanned and cropped to be added into the newspapers layout.

Artist Statement: This piece involves characters from shows and movies affected by the writer's strike. I drew these characters as if they were in a meeting with the writer except there is no writer. They all have worried to nonchalant faces expressing their concern and unawareness. I used pencil and a fine tip marker as my media so that I could easily shade and extenuate their outlines. I decided to not work with color to give more of a gloomy and serious vibe. As I drew the background I envisioned what a meeting room would look like with big open windows leveling with the clouds, plain walls, and carpet instead of tiles. With the characters, I had used reference photos to make sure I drew them correctly. Drawing the actors, i had specifically used reference photos of their side profiles. As I searched for side profiles of the cartoon characters I noticed that looking for a picture and even watching clips of the character was difficult because they are rarely originally drawn showing their side profile so i had to keeping redrawing the character until it looked "right". I drew this in my sketch book and then scanned the artwork on a flatbed scanner and used Photoshop to pop the contrast a little and clean up any extra marks or dirty white areas with the eraser tool. With this art piece I definitely had to make sure I drew the characters and actors carefully so that the viewers could easily identify who they all are, making it a tedious task. I would have my classmates look at the art to receive feedback on whether or not I had accomplished my goal.

Artist Statement: When sketching out the calligraphy I wanted it to have a feeling of fancy animalistic. With sharp points at the top and bottom acting as horns and fangs. The S morphing into a tail. The background is composed of pink flames representing their chaos.

Artist Statement: After reading the story and speaking with the story writer, we both decided to go with a visual representation of a student trying to study but not being able to due to apps costing money. I hadn't used any references for this piece, I sketched out ideas on what I wanted to do. After the sketches I again spoke with the writer of the story to ask if they had wanted me to add or change anything before I began to outline with a fine tip pen. I had drawn the student with a discontent expression as they brought focus to their computer opened up to a studying app that was now not needing payment to be able to continue. On the board the words test and study are written and on the table and a pile of notes are sprawled out needing to be filled out. After outlining, the piece was scanned and rendered. If i could change anything, I would add more onto the board, there is a lot of blank space that could have been filled in. I am happy with my decision to add exclamation points atop the computer alerting the student of the new update.

Artist Statement: Outlined by ball point pen and drawn in with sharpie. I decided to draw the album cover of the album. I found it to be very interesting and fitting for the story. Drake's son, Adonis Graham, was the illustrator of his album cover.

Artist Statement: Outlined with a fine tip pen, I chose to draw a radio that I had always seen growing up. I knew I wanted to involve Nelson's face into the art and decided to draw him and the instruments he was known for playing in his music into the screen of the radio. I wanted to show just how his music reached his listeners.
