Get ready for Millard South’s 2019-2020 theatre season

Written By Natalie Schamp

The 2019-2020 drama season consists of five shows, two of which are musicals. Death Trap, Rock of Ages (the first musical), The Twilight Zone, Cinderella, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (the other musical).
The first show of the season will be Death Trap, which is a comedy-thriller boasting a cast of five. It follows a washed up playwright, Sidney, and his growing desire to publish a successful play. This innocent longing turns sinister when a young writer sends his spectacular, practically perfect murder-mystery play to Sidney for review. From here the plot only gets more sinister and unpredictable. Auditions for this show were held May 22 and 23. The show will perform Sept. 13, 14 and 15.
The next show in the queue is the big musical, Rock of Ages. This musical is chock full of ‘80’s rock. It features a large ensemble and fun dance routines. The main characters struggle to achieve their many different goals all while rocking out to classic rock. Eventually they find that their dreams aren’t really all they’re cracked up to be and that sometimes what you think you want isn’t the best option. Auditions for this show will be the second week back next year. It will perform Nov. 15, 16 and 17.
The Twilight Zone is a play based off of the 1960’s classic t.v show. The play takes some of the most famous episodes and translates them onstage. This vintage and eerie show will transport the audience right into a dimension as vast as space and and as timeless as infinity.
Junior Madi Wesch says she is looking forward to Twilight Zone because “I’m excited to see what our drama department is able to do with the psychological aspects and eerie themes of the show.” The performances for The Twilight Zone will be Jan. 10 and 11.
The second to last show of the year will be Cinderella. This classic story is not native to the U.S or even the U.K, in fact it’s practically universal. The show will follow multiple Cinderella stories from around the world including Russian, Chinese, Native American and Egyptian versions of the tale. It will include beautiful set pieces and even some puppets. Cinderella will perform March 13, 14 and 15.
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will wrap up this upcoming year. This comedy-musical stars six middle-schoolers as they battle their way through a spelling bee. They each have an abundance of character and quite a few quirks that come out as they battle for the spelling crown. Four audience members get to come on stage and participate in the spelling bee, or try to at least.
Junior Cole Snook says he is looking forward to this show because “it’s a very funny musical and I feel like it fits my acting style well.” The last show of the year will perform May 1, 2 and 3.
This upcoming season will be full of drama, music and lots of laughter.
