How do I even begin with this review? I’ve been a fan of the Scream franchise for many years and have seen all of them at least three times. I was excited originally at the announcement of another movie, but the excitement quickly started to fizzle out as time went on. Melissa Barrera (the actress in the lead role in the past two movies) was fired from the film for her stance on human rights. Another lead actress, Jenna Ortega, backed out in support, causing significant financial damage and over a year of backlash to the production. Kevin Williamson, the creator of the franchise, stepped into the director role, which you think would give the film some real potential, but it did not compare to the movies that came before it.
Scream 7 follows Sidney Prescott (the original main character from the 1996 film) and her family. They have been living a peaceful life until her past comes back to haunt her and Ghostface returns. The character of Ghostface is what keeps fans coming back. Fans are excited to see the gruesome kills, minor mistakes, and the big reveal. The franchise has had a formula of opening the movie with a death that has some relevance later on in the story. Scream 7 breaks this tradition with the insignificant death of characters with no connection to the main storyline. There are dozens of references to the previous movies, but they often come with plot holes. Throughout the film, there are moments that a devoted fan would recognize as either incorrect or something that doesn’t make sense. There remain unanswered questions and confusion when following the story. There are several things deemed wrong with this film, and this is only a few of them.
Overall, the 7th installment does not live up to the low expectations fans had. The theme of nostalgia doesn’t quite reach the hearts of fans, as there has already been an amazing sequel that pays its respects to the original film. This film had countless issues that ultimately led to its failure. There is hope that another movie can redeem the attraction they lost here, but most believe it’s time to put the franchise to rest.
