Imagine this: a girl K-pop group, not just dominating the charts, but also annihilating demons with their music. Sounds like something out of a fever dream, right? Well, prepare yourselves, because Netflix’s new animated feature ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’, turned that dream into a reality, and the internet is absolutely losing its mind – in the best way possible.
This isn’t just a movie; it’s a moment. From the first time the trailer dropped, teasing this incredible fictional world, the internet went wild. The fans wondered: could it deliver on such a wild premise? Oh, it absolutely has.
At first glance, the concept seems strange. K-Pop idols? Demon hunters? In a kid’s movie? Yet, this seemingly unusual combination is what made the number one movie on Netflix for several weeks. Within just one day, the movie became the most-watched film in over 22 countries. The question is, what makes this movie so popular?
After seeing the massive swarm of media attention the movie has received, I decided to watch it a few days after its release. I was immediately hooked by the first song. The music was catchy, and I was already invested in the plot. I had never really seen a movie with this kind of plot. I finished the movie in one sitting, unable to pause it. The plotline was engaging and kept me waiting to see what was happening next. There were themes of vulnerability, acceptance, empowerment, and even some underlying Christian motives. Once I finished it, the ending had me anxious for more. The songs were stuck in my head for days afterwards. Since the first time, I’ve rewatched the film around 14 times.
For those who haven’t watched, the story follows a female K-pop group called ‘HUNTR/X’. Rumi (Arden Cho), Zoey (Ji-Young Yoo), and Mira (May Hong) are the next generation of popstar demon hunters. Their songs, voices, and weapons kill demons to protect the world. They use their music to control a magical barrier called the “Honmoon” and eventually turn the color golden. When they’re so close to their end goal, the demon ruler Gwi-Ma sends a male K-pop group called the ‘Saja Boys’ to defeat them and steal their fans along with their souls. It ends in a bittersweet way, leaving many people heartbroken, including me.
Before the release, I hadn’t seen anything about this movie, even with the trailer being released back in May. For me and many others, the movie seemingly came out of nowhere. At first, I questioned how this brand-new movie could receive so much attention. I was skeptical whether it was really going to be as amazing as people had been saying it was. My final thoughts are only good things. This movie was an incredible story, unlike any other I’ve seen before.
