In the last six months, a new alternative pop artist has caught the attention of almost eight million people on Spotify. Bella Kay, a 19-year old from Orlando has had songs go viral across multiple platforms including her songs “The Sick” and “Iloveitiloveitiloveit.”
In July of 2025 I was scrolling through my phone when Bella’s music popped up. It immediately caught my attention and she has quickly become one of my favorite artists.
In November of 2025, Kay released her first EP “Sick To My Stomach.” The EP with its six songs and a run time of around 19 minutes, perfectly captures the stages of heartbreak and grief. Her second EP, “A Couple Minutes Out,” with three songs and a run time of around nine minutes, touches on the parts of grief that aren’t talked about publicly.
The EP “Sick To My Stomach” focuses on the feelings of heartbreak and feelings of loneliness. While I wish it was longer, I understand it’s not an album.
Something that I feel makes her connect to her listeners perfectly is the emotional level of her songs – a mix of the acoustic vocals and limited instruments through the majority of the song portrays her emotions perfectly.
The EP opens with “Lonely” where Kay sings about people “smelling” the lonely on her and how it follows her everywhere in everything she does. I think that’s a very common feeling with our generation, even when surrounded by others, and she represents it perfectly.
The next song and her second most streamed song “The Sick” dives into toxic relationships and dealing with substance abuse in relationships, which is a situation many teenagers find themselves in. Often teens don’t see the problems until they are out and reflect back, many times feeling like this song.
“Georgia” and “God Knows” dive into the grieving stage of heartbreak. Kay sings about reminiscing over old memories and first experiences they had together along with trying to convince herself the person is an awful human being.
“Call Me Baby” and “Your New Girlfriend” are the revenge and jealousy stages of this album. “Call Me Baby” focuses on people from your past always coming back, despite new relationships, however Kay isn’t interested in them and is using it to boost her morale. “Your New Girlfriend” focuses on being envious of her old partner’s new girlfriend. Wishing that she could take the new girlfriend and date her instead. It focuses on pointing out the bad things about the old partner and the pros of switching to her.
Overall I think that “Sick To My Stomach” is an amazing album that captures the feelings of teenage heartbreak and grief in any relationship.
I wish “A Couple Minutes Out” was longer, with a runtime of only around 9 minutes and only three songs, the EP is super short. I anticipated the release of this EP for weeks with Kay teasing the songs online for months. Even though the songs changed slightly from what was teased, they did not disappoint.
The first song “iloveitiloveitiloveit” was the leading single on this EP, and Kay’s most streamed song. It’s very popular online, leading to more streams on spotify and apple music. The song touches on being in love with another person’s bad habits but not caring that they are bad for you, which then leads to developing your own bad habits that you end up not caring about.
The next song, “Steady,” is about not being ready or stable enough for a healthy relationship due to bad habits along with talking about not being worthy of love because of physical appearance, something that I think is common today. The bridge of the song is my personal favorite. It’s a mix of wanting to but also knowing you can’t and you are torn between your heart and brain.
Finally, “Wonder, Wander,” is about wondering if the person you ended things with was your soulmate, and wondering what your future would be like if you stayed together and had a family, but also knowing you have to move on because they were a bad person and you deserve better.
Overall, Kay is an amazing new artist and I see her going places, if you want new music to listen to I heavily recommend her and her music. She is currently teasing new music that will hopefully be released soon. She is also currently on tour, unfortunately it’s mostly a European and East coast tour with the only other stops being in Austin and a few stops in California.
